Social Responsibility

Hillbourne Primary School recognises the importance of corporate social responsibility as a guiding principle. Our aim is to empower our pupils to become kind, caring, and responsible citizens in our ever-changing diverse world.

Social responsibility is fully embedded in our teaching both inside and outside the classroom throughout the whole school.  Children learn to value different perspectives, embrace inclusion, understand the importance of sustainability and the wider environment, as well as the importance of giving back to society more than you take.

Helping care for themselves and others

Personal wellbeing lies at the heart of the Hillbourne ethos. Across every element of school life, we promote a deep sense of belonging where every child feels seen, valued, and supported. Our pupils are encouraged to care for themselves through emotional awareness, positive routines, and self-regulation strategies — fostering resilience and healthy habits from an early age.
This self-care naturally extends to how they care for one another. Whether it’s offering a quiet moment of empathy to a struggling peer, being a friendly face in the playground, or stepping into leadership roles that promote harmony, children grow through connection and compassion. Our Year 6 Buddy Programme provides Reception pupils with older mentors who model kindness and responsibility. In addition, our trained Peer Mediators and Zone of Regulation Ambassadors empower pupils to resolve conflicts thoughtfully and manage emotions constructively.
Care also blooms in unexpected places: watching children gently nurture baby chicks in Reception not only teaches responsibility but deepens their understanding of what it means to protect and value life.

Helping Fellow Pupils

Pupils in Years 3 to 6 have the opportunity to apply for leadership and positions of responsibility throughout the school, nurturing their confidence, empathy, and teamwork. These roles are designed to empower children to make a meaningful impact on daily school life and to support their peers in a variety of ways.
By opening up leadership opportunities to younger pupils, Hillbourne builds a culture of care and active citizenship, where every voice matters and children are supported to grow as role models within our community.

Giving back to the local community

Our community outreach programme enables the children to actively give back to the local community. This spans supporting our local food bank charity, especially though Harvest and Christmas donations, right through to visiting a local residential home, to share songs and stories and connecting with the elderly residents.

Giving back to Global Society

Each year, Hillbourne proudly supports global causes championed by our wider school community, encouraging our pupils to think beyond borders and embrace the values of empathy and active citizenship. These initiatives foster a deeper understanding of global responsibility and the power of collective kindness.
Currently, we are working closely with the charity Hope for Horizons to support a school in Uganda, raising awareness, building relationships, and fundraising to provide essential resources that make a meaningful difference. Through assemblies, pupil-led projects, and community events, our children learn that giving back isn’t just an act of kindness, it’s a way of creating hope, opportunity, and connection across the world.

Understanding different cultures and perspectives

‘Inclusivity and cultural diversity are promoted through deliberate curriculum design. Pupils are highly knowledgeable about the beliefs and faiths of others. ‘
Ofsted 2025
Awareness and appreciation of different cultures throughout the world are embedded in our Geography, PSHE, RE and Music curriculums.

Understanding global issues

Inside the classroom we ensure that all of our pupils understand fundamental human rights and societal and environmental issues that impact the global population. Our Fairtrade project helps the children take their learning into their home environment opening up important conversations with parents. We are also part of the Green Schools Project which inspires pupils to take climate action while building leadership and sustainability skills. At Hillbourne, being part of this project allows children to connect their classroom learning with real-world environmental challenges and solutions.
